"The Sleepy Zoo": How I Wrote a Children's Book Using ChatGPT

Hello AI Enthusiasts,

Welcome back to another exciting issue of AI Experiments! This time, I'm thrilled to share a special project that I've been working on—my very first children's book titled "The Sleepy Zoo". What makes this project even more unique is that I wrote the entire book and generated the images using ChatGPT. Let me take you behind the scenes of how AI played a central role in crafting this bedtime story.

Step 1: Writing the Story

Here is the prompt I used:

You are a professional, successful writer. Write me a children's book! The target market is children aged between 0 and 1 year. Make it rhyme. Feature animals in the story. The story must be appropriate for children under 1 year.

That’s it. It was a short prompt, but look at the generated story, I think it’s beautiful:

Title: The Sleepy Zoo

In the quiet, cozy zoo, Animals are sleepy too. Underneath the twinkling stars, They cuddle up, near and far.

Tiny Tiger yawns so wide, Snuggles up, right by his side. Elephant, with trunk so long, Dreams of playing, all night long.

Zebra's stripes begin to fade, As she dreams in the glade. Giraffe lowers her head down low, Dreaming of the trees that grow.

Monkey curls his tail so tight, Hugs it close all through the night. Panda's black and white so neat, Dreams of bamboo, soft and sweet.

Lion with his golden mane, Yawns and dreams of sunny plains. Penguin waddles to her bed, Snuggles in, rests her head.

Koala in the eucalyptus tree, Dreams of leaves, so happily. Hippo by the water's side, Dreams of rivers deep and wide.

All the animals, big and small, Dreaming dreams, one and all. The moon shines down, soft and bright, Guiding them through the night.

So close your eyes and cuddle tight, Dream of animals tonight. In the quiet, cozy zoo, Sweet dreams are waiting just for you.

Step 2: Illustrations

While writing the text was a significant part of the project, illustrations are crucial in a children's book. I generated an image one by one for each verse. Here is the first prompt:

Generate an image for a children's book! Here is the description of the image:

In the quiet, cozy zoo,

Animals are sleepy too.

Underneath the twinkling stars,

They cuddle up, near and far.

Make sure to include these animals in the image: tiger, elephant, zebra, giraffe, monkey, panda, lion, penguin, koala, hippo.

The generated image:

Then for each verse I asked ChatGPT to generate a matching image:

Generate an image for a children's book! The target market is children aged between 0 and 1 year. Here is the description of the image:

Tiny Tiger yawns so wide, Snuggles up, right by his side.

Make sure to include a tiger in the image.

Step 3: Ebook Design with Canva

Once I had generated the text and images, I opened Canva to design the book. As you can see, it’s a very simple design, just the images with the text. The cover image was generated by ChatGPT, too.

Final Thoughts

The Sleepy Zoo is more than just a children's book—it's a testament to the evolving role of AI in the creative arts. While AI won't replace human creativity, it can certainly enhance and expand our imaginative capacities. Writing this book with ChatGPT was a journey of discovery, and I hope it inspires others to explore the potential of AI in their creative endeavors.

What's Next?

I'm already brainstorming ideas for the next AI-assisted project! Whether it's another book, a series of short stories, or something entirely different, the possibilities are endless with AI as a creative partner.

Until next time, keep dreaming and creating!

Warm regards,

Bence Ur
